Getting started as a volunteer
Our district's volunteer application process is online.
Each year we receive hundreds of volunteer applications, and processing can take up to five business days. Thank you for planning ahead!
1. Select the volunteer category for which you wish to apply
School Day Volunteer: volunteers who work in close proximity to district employees. Volunteer activities may include reading or math tutor, classroom helper, day field trip chaperone, library helper, or Watch D.O.G.S.
Extended Support Volunteer: volunteers who may not be in direct proximity of a district employee and who provide substantial assistance. Volunteer activities may include an overnight chaperone, volunteer club advisor, and program booster.
Volunteer Athletic Coach: volunteers who support middle and high school athletic teams.
Please note: Volunteer Athletic Coaches may serve as Extended Support and School Day Volunteers, and Extended Support Volunteers may serve as School Day Volunteers.
2. Begin your online application
All volunteer applications are processed in Human Resources. Please complete the Full Washington State Background Check and clearance packet. The packet includes: a Washington State Patrol Application, the Granite Falls School District Disclosure Form, and the Volunteer Confidentiality Statement. To have your application considered, complete a copy of both sides of your Washington State Drivers' License. Please note the volunteer type and location for which you wish to apply for on your application.
The volunteer application is currently only available in English.
Please contact Human Resources if you need additional application directions.
3. Provide information for background checks
School employees each undergo a background check before being authorized to work in our schools. Similarly, each volunteer candidate must undergo a background check. The type of volunteer activity determines the type of background check.
School Day and Extended Support Volunteers: Washington State Patrol criminal history and National Sex Offender registry through an outside agency.
Volunteer Athletic Coach: Washington State Patrol criminal history, National Sex Offender registry through an outside agency and fingerprinting through the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI).
While all volunteers must be screened through the background check processes, a criminal history does not automatically disqualify one from volunteering. If there is a concern, an applicant will have the opportunity to talk with a Human Resource representative. (In such cases you may ask to provide personal references for additional follow-up.)
4. Complete safety training and requirements
A volunteer's training is determined by the type of volunteer activity.
Extended Support Volunteers and Volunteer Athletic Coaches also require online safety training and an upload of a photo identification.
Volunteer Athletic Coaches require additional Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) training.
5. Orientation
A designated individual at the school or program where you wish to volunteer will provide a volunteer orientation, including sign in/out and badge processes.
