Highly Capable Program

Students are identified through a comprehensive, multi-step process using multiple data points to ensure equitable access to services. These may include:

• Cognitive assessments such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)
• Academic achievement data (i-Ready Reading and Math)
• Teacher recommendations and classroom performance
• Additional indicators of advanced learning needs

Screening takes place in mid-winter, with additional testing in the spring for students who qualify for further evaluation. Families are notified at each step and must provide permission for additional assessment and program participation.

The Granite Falls School District uses a continuum of services to meet the needs of highly capable learners:

Kindergarten

• Enrichment provided in the general education classroom

Grades 1–8

• Placement in Highly Capable cluster classrooms
• Instruction includes:
  • Curriculum compacting
  • Accelerated learning opportunities
  • Differentiated instruction and enrichment
• Middle school options may include:
  • Subject-level acceleration in mathematics
  • Early access to high school coursework

Grades 9–12

• Access to advanced and college-level coursework, including:
  • Honors classes
  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • College in the High School
  • Running Start

These services are designed to promote deeper thinking, creativity, and academic challenge at all levels.

How are students identified for the Highly Capable Program?

Students are identified using multiple measures, including cognitive testing (CogAT), academic performance data, and teacher input to ensure a well-rounded understanding of each student’s strengths.

When does screening take place?

Universal screening typically occurs in mid-winter. Students who qualify may be invited for additional testing in the spring.

What is the CogAT test?

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) measures students’ reasoning abilities in areas such as verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal thinking. It is one of several tools used to determine eligibility for Highly Capable services.

What happens if my child qualifies for further testing?

Families are notified and asked to provide permission before additional testing is administered.

If a student does not qualify, families are notified and may contact the district to discuss results or ask questions about the process.

Services vary by grade level, but may include cluster grouping, accelerated learning, enrichment, and advanced coursework such as AP or Running Start.

Yes—families can speak with their child’s teacher or contact the district office to inquire about nomination or referral opportunities.
