Students who may qualify for Multilingual Learner services are identified through the enrollment process:

• Families complete a Home Language Survey during registration

• Students are assessed using the WIDA Screener, the state-approved English language proficiency assessment

Washington State requires that eligible students be identified and screened within 10 school days of enrollment.

The WIDA Screener measures language skills in:

• Reading
• Writing

Assessment results determine eligibility for English Language Development services.

Students who qualify receive English Language Development (ELD) services tailored to their individual language needs. These services are designed to support both language acquisition and success in academic content areas.

Services may include:

• Small group or individual English language instruction
• In-class support and collaboration with classroom teachers
• Targeted language development aligned to WIDA standards
• Instruction designed to support academic vocabulary and comprehension

All services are provided by trained educators and aligned to state English language development standards.

Granite Falls School District provides services primarily through a supportive mainstream model, meaning students:

• Remain in their general education classrooms with their peers
• Receive targeted English language support integrated throughout the school day
• May receive additional small-group or supplemental instruction

This approach ensures that students:

• Continue to access grade-level curriculum
• Develop language skills in meaningful academic contexts

State guidance emphasizes that multilingual learners must receive both:

• Designated English Language Development (ELD)

Students receiving ELD services are assessed regularly to monitor growth in English language proficiency.
