Ways to Practice Spelling Words

Activities with higher point values will take more time and effort.

5 Point Activities

_____ 1. Alphabetize the words.

_____ 2. Divide each word into syllables.

_____ 3. Write each word and circle the vowels.

_____ 4. Write each word and circle the consonants.

_____ 5. Spell the words aloud with a family member.

10 Point Activities

_____6. Use each word in a sentence and underline the spelling word.

_____ 7. Write the words and a synonym (means the same) for each word.  You can use a thesaurus!

_____ 8. Write the words and an antonym (means the opposite) for each word. You can use a thesaurus!

_____ 9. Draw a picture and "hide" the words in the picture.  Use colored pencil or crayons to draw the picture.

_____ 10. Type the words three times each.

15 Point Activities

_____ 11. Make as many "mini-words" using the letters in each spelling word (making words).

_____ 12. Cut the words out of a magazine/newspaper, and make a collage.

_____ 13. Record words on a cassette tape and practice with a tape recorder.

20 Point Activities

_____ 17. Write tongue twisters with the words. 1 tongue twister for each word!

_____ 18. Make a crossword puzzle on graph paper using the words. (YOU MUST INCLUDE CLUES FOR YOUR PUZZLE)

_____ 20. Write a story using the words. Underline each word.

_____ 21.  Find and write the origin of each word.

You need to earn 40 points or more each week!  Check off the assignments completed.  Your homework contract is due every Thursday.  Please keep your spelling list in your binder to study Thursday night for your test on Friday.
